A tucked away little gem, that is a true Golconda
Having recently moved from Bramhope to Apperley Bridge, I have re-evaluated my attitude towards bars and restaurants outside of Leeds.
Come on, be honest- if you live in Leeds, most of you shy away from the outskirts of Bradford, and in most cases I might agree as Leeds has so much to offer. However now and again, a little gem pops its head up and says `Hey! I’m here and I’m pretty good`. Idle Beerhouse did just that with me. To be fair, if I had still lived in Leeds I would probably not have discovered it.
Formally the Symposium, it changed its name a while back when new owners took it over and improved it in every way. I discovered it about six months ago when my pal suggested it for a Friday afternoon drink. The people were friendly – everyone saying hello – you don’t get that in Leeds and certainly not in Bramhope, as everyone is too busy wondering how rich you are. This bar/eatery has really lovely staff and friendly patrons, who chat like they know you. It’s very refreshing.
I decided to try the food as I had seen people eating each time I had gone in and it always looked lovely; extremely well presented without any grandiloquence, which I love. They have recently updated the menu along with the chef. The menu is simple, with all your favourites, like sandwiches, salads, burgers, pizzas etc. However, don’t judge the menu by the menu – this is far from an American diner. The sandwiches are quintessentially British and hearty, the salads are superfood salads, the pizzas are – well – quite frankly, superb. The burgers are unique, that’s for sure. Then they have classics like rib-eye, sausage and mash as well as Catalan stew – which I wanted but it had peppers in and I’m allergic. They also have sharing platters. In addition, possibly the best breakfast around on Fri, Sat and Sun – 10am – 1pm – trust me on this one, it’s a breakfast of kings.
We were dining on a Thursday. Unbeknown to us, they offer a Mexican Street Food Night every Thursday, which I have never seen before. The place was packed. We ordered everything from Fajitas to chilli hot dogs, with sides of nachos, corn and fajita fries – all for £12 for a main and a side with a shot of Tequila. What a great concept. The only thing missing was the Mexican music and the Mariachi dancers.
There were four of us dining. We all stayed all night and had a great time. Idle Beerhouse – your secret is out.
