A surprising discovery
The top end of Leeds town is not an area to which I often venture; however, recently my friend and I were out and fancied something different. Someone suggested the top end of town – ‘the fashionista end’, I call it, where everyone has a well-groomed beard and sports a checked shirt. We ended up in Parkside Tavern, a Georgian-style building that boasts so much more inside and out back than the front lets on.
Inside we were greeted by an imposing bar directly in front of the entrance, with an open kitchen to the left and a cool, yet inviting pool area slightly hidden to the right. It is not a pub with pool tables, even though it is; the American pool area is discrete. One could drink and eat in here all night and not be aware of the pool tables.
Speaking of food, try the flatbread pizzas. They are to die for; a great filler for the night ahead. You can even buy a half-size portion if you’re not that hungry but fancy a nibble.
We opted to play pool on one of the four big tables. It cost us £4 for half an hour. We played for over 35 mins and they only charged £4 – a nice touch, as they could have charged £8.
We then decided to sit in the astonishing rear beer garden which overlooks the church and is a perfect suntrap. You feel like Mr Benn as you step outside into a new world – very appealing indeed. We sat drinking and chatting and nibbling for three or four hours. The ambiance and clientele were fantastic.
The well-trained staff are young, yet professional, with nothing being too much trouble, considering we left slightly tiddly-pom
This secret charming bar is a real find. The regular offers appear to span the week. The atmosphere is chilled. The food is limited to mainly pizzas, but they are damn good pizzas. The service is spot on. But the best bit is the secret garden at the back. This is one of Leeds’ hidden gems.
There’s even a separate cool chill-out room that can be hired out, perfect if you are looking for somewhere in Leeds to hold a private party or event. A great venue that only the hipsters appear to know about. Well guys, the secret is out.
