When it comes to life as a celebrity, it can be hard to make the right choices. Sometimes it is impossible to know which roles will hit the big time and which roles will be a big flop.
Emily Blunt/ Black Widow
Emily Blunt was originally approached for the role of Black Widow in the Marvel franchise. There are conflicting reports on why she turned the role down: some say it was due to scheduling conflicts and others say it was because they could not reach a deal on pay. For whatever reason, the role went to Scarlett Johansson, who now has a permanent spot in the long-running and highly successful Marvel franchise.
John Travolta/Forrest Gump
This one is really hard to swallow because it is quite impossible to imagine anyone besides Tom Hanks as the lead role in Forrest Gump. But believe it or not, the role originally went to John Travolta. There’s no denying that John is a talented actor, but the film would have been very different with John at the helm. John admitted after the movie was released that it was probably a mistake to turn down the role.
Mel Gibson/ Roman Maximus
Mel Gibson was originally approached for the role of Roman Maximus in Gladiator. He turned down the role because he felt he was getting too old for those types of action movies. That is a bit strange since he took on The Patriot that same year. Gladiator was a big success, earning Russell Crowe an Oscar and skyrocketing his career. In the years that followed, Mel Gibson took a different direction.
Al Pacino/Han Solo
It is hard to believe, but Harrison Ford was not the first choice for the iconic Han Solo. Al Pacino was riding on the fame of The Godfather and was given the script for Star Wars. However, Al said that he found the script too confusing. He could not understand it, and he did not want to take the role. Since he will be known forever as The Godfather, it is hard to imagine that he could have been Han Solo.
Jim Carrey/Jack Sparrow
No offense to Jim Carrey (he has some decent acting chops), but Bruce Almighty just earned a special place in history. Jim Carrey was the original choice for Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean. But since Jim was filming Bruce Almighty, he had to turn the role down. So, thank you Bruce Almighty, because there is no way Jack Sparrow could be played by anyone but Johnny Depp.
Anne Hathaway/Tiffany Maxwell
Anne Hathaway was originally given the role of Tiffany Maxwell in Silver Linings Playbook, but her schedule forced her to drop the role. The role was given to Jennifer Lawrence, who won an Oscar for her performance. Anne Hathaway is probably not too disappointed as she also won an Oscar that year for her role in Les Misérables. Who knows how the movie would have changed if Anne had stayed with the project?
