Much better than the average pub restaurant fayre!
There’s ‘pub grub’ and then there is ‘great grub’, that just happens to be served in a pub. This was my thought on dining at the Old Glen House one evening.
A classic country pub, which was once an old farmhouse, situated in Shipley Glen, Located right at the edge of the woods, It is therefore very popular with walkers and their dogs! I would imagine that there is no better place to sit and relax after along walk in the surrounding countryside, with a nice refreshing drink or pint of ale.
I had heard that the Old Glen House takes a lot of pride in its home cooked food. Therefore my partner and I decided to travel that bit extra, to dine there one lovely summers eve. There is a designated dining area to accomodate guests who want to sit down and have a more complete dining experience.
The menu itself was fairly simple in concept. Offering staples such as ‘soup of the day’ for starters and pasta, risottos, burgers, chicken and steaks for mains. This is accompanied by a daily specials board with more options.
So far so predicatable, but what made the difference was the quality of the cooking. I ordered the tempura prawns for starters and my partner had the lamb kofta. These could have been average starters but they were much better then that. Lovely light tempura and generous succulent prawns. The lamb kofta was homemade and apparently had an amazing texture.
Similarly the mains were reaching above average expectations. My veggie breaded mushroom and halloumi burger was really, really good. Tasty, nice textures, again generous, and extra brownie points for the side of real fries with skins.
One of the more unusual options on the menu was a ‘beetroot risotto’. My partner decided to be adventurous and ordered it but not without trepidation. He was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed it, Delighted by its unusual flavour and nutty but creamy texture. Even the cheescake we shared for dessert, was better than the usual.
Add to that, very friendly and efficient service in comfortable and welcoming surroundings. I would happily return for another evening out or a daytime lunch.
